Hi All

I finally got hold of PJ's The Best of from last year for his 70th birthday and it is amazing. The sound and remastering is superb and of course the performances are superb. Now EMI can we have the complete works on Cd and how about paying the man some royalties!!! He may not be legally entitled to any but surly he does morally!!!

Good to see more Probyans joining the group. My first PJ record was in fact 2 together - his 2 first LPs, way back in 1960 something!!! I bought his singles afterwards.
Can anybody out there tell me what year the album "Thanks" was recorded. I've just played it and it made me feel very sad because he sounds quite ill on it, and it made me wonder whether it was before or after 1992. When you hear him now he sounds so much younger. Please don't think I'm being negative about him, I've had this cd for quite a few years and it didn't put me off him, it's just part of his colourful life.

Hi Annie,

For that sort of information I always go to Joep's P.J. Proby pages:
http://home.wxs.nl/~kilkens/proby.htm
You can then go to his CD page. I found that Thanks is from 1990, so before Pj's victory over Jack Daniels:

Hi Annie,
I have "Thanks" on tape and CD and I took it along to the "Landsdowne" in Blackpool in 1992 to see if PJ would sign it for me. PJ at the time was a very sick man but was "Mr Charm" as usual, signed my tape and let my hubby take many memorable photos, one being in Leannes 70th tribute book.
That day I will never forget, as shortly after PJ left for America and very nearly never came back. Thankfully the man up there decided PJ deserved a second chance and he has more than honoured that arrangement. It is wonderful to see PJ now after those bleak years.
Amazing how one CD can stir so many memories!!
See you at a show soon I hope Annie.

Hi,
I know P.J. doesn't think much of his Savoy recordings because he wasn't in top vocal form at that moment. I'm not sure what he thinks of his CD "Thanks" from 1990,it's a fact that the name John Sutton (J'Ace Records) gets him steamed up & with good reason I believe.
Speaking personally I love most of his Savoy Stuff & even tho' "Thanks" was also recorded when he was not 100% I still think it's very good.He really bared his soul on that album & you can hear it!,such emotion! He didn't like where he was career wise at that moment in time but he was unfortunately stuck there!
A few years later he got himself on back on track through sheer will power & look where he's at now!!
Every note he has sung, every track he's recorded in his long career all gel together & make him what he is now! The best damn male vocalist around & absolutely second to none!
Long may he go on.....& on!

"Thanks" so much guys for the info. I assume then that the recordings were actually in 1990 - I agree with you Ron, although PJ sounds very under the weather I like to listen to this cd now and again just to remind me where he was and look at him now, in my opinion better than he has ever been. I didn't see him in th 60s, I was too busy having a family etc. but my first time of seeing him live was circa 1973 at The New Cresta Club in Solihull - did anybody else see him there? He was good but he is superb now - Christchurch convinces me of that. Long may he reign as the best voice ever. I was so priviledged to speak with him at Christchurch and he felt his voice was good that night also - as he put it "I didn't drop any notes".

Hi Annie,
I travelled from Manchester to see PJ at The New Cresta Club in Solihull.
I think he had on his black suit,i have pictures of that, but they are not very good ones. I seem to remember that they were selling the "I'm Yours" single. Think his show started with "Let the waters run Down" In those days it was always a bit nervy waiting for Jim to come on stage,as you did not know if would be Jim or Jack appearing. I have a good tape of Jim's show at Tiffany's in Manchester in July 73, singing things like Proud Mary and Jack Jones "were coming apart again" or someyhing similar to that title. He was on great vocal form both singing and chatting that night.
Another night around that time at The Broadway club in Chadderton Manchester,he was singing Trilogy when i fight broke out between a guy his girlfriend and another bloke. The fight quickly got to the front of the stage, and PJ just like you see cowboys and indians do,he leapt off the stage and onto the attackers back, You have never seen bouncers move that quickly. About 30 secs later,Jim wriggled free from these bodies on the floor, climbed back up on stage, picked the mic up and got straight back into Trilogy. The cheer from the crowd was like England winning the world cup. Manja if you are going to be seeing Jim,ask him does he remember that night. Sorry Annie i have rambled on a bit. Happy days they were, but these days you KNOW Jims shows are going to be brilliant.

cheers

Skintman (John)

Hi all,
re THANKS just look at the label where it says 1990. while we're on the subject STAGE OF FOOLS is one of my favourite recordings even though he was obviously not at his best. Like Sue I went to the LANSDOWNE it was a very sad night, PJ just could not get through his act and after sitting on his stool with his head in his hands he was helped off and I never thought I would see him perform again. ( How wrong I was ). The next day I woke up to the news he was in hospital with a heart attack!. By the way Sue since you asked I'm from sunny? Burnley I got home from Port Sunlight at midnight. SEE YOU ALL.

Hi guys, I've been off line a couple of days, BT lost my broadband for me!!!
Skintman, Is there any chance of emailing me any pics of The New Cresta club, please? Yes he was wearing a black suit and I remember him lifting his trouser leg to show "how good his legs were". arlean@terry-smith.info
I'd love to be reminded visually. I loved your stories of Jim, carry on rambling.

George, you're right about 1990 on the label of the cd but does that mean they were recorded then ? It takes a magnifying glass for me to see print as small as that. Age might bring "wisdom" but it also brings poor eyesight.

It's me again. I've just been looking through my cds and find one dated 1990 but was actually recorded 1989, "New Country", contains 3 songs only, Hot California Nights: American Trilogy and Seas of Time. How obscure is this cd? Who else out there has it? This was a gift from brother Terry - price is still on it, £4. He knows how to spend money. This is by Da Doo Ron Ron Records. There's a lot of information on the insert about who took part etc., which I like to know. Well done Ron Ellis.

Hi Annie,
I have a copy of "NEW COUNTRY" I bought two copies but recently gave one away to a very kind lady! Like you say it was recorded in DECEMBER 89, with the help of THE FRANK JOHNS BAND.
